A quiet early Sunday morning start enabled us to number up the parking bays, with the reception Land Rover Discovery doing sterling work, with its built in awning providing shelter for the reception table and dishing out the entrants paperwork. (It was a dry morning!)

While the run this year was not an SWTVC event, it was in the main organised by 4 SWTVC members viz Roger Martin, Grant Coubrough, your correspondent and Dan Gardner with the assistance of two committee members from the Strathendrick Classic and Sports Car club, and we thought a wee write up on this motoring outing may be of interest to club members.

Quite a variety of vehicles this year, with 1 1912 Napier, a Ford model T , 2 Rovers, 3 Alvis, 3 Morris, 4 Aston Martins, 6 Austins, 4 Riley’s, 3 MG’s and further single entries of BSA, Singer and Lagonda.

At the appointed start time, each car was flagged off at one minute intervals and following the route instructions headed east onto the B9140 eventually skirting Dollar and at Yetts o Muckhart took the very scenic road through Glendevon (B 934) to Dunning where we veered left for Auchterarder. From there it was another interesting route over the Kinkell Bridge and via the back roads came into Crieff from an easterly direction for lunch at the Crieff Hydro.

All cars were carefully parked up in the small paddock that Stephen Leckie (of the hotel) uses for his car Coffee and Classics gatherings in Spring and Autumn, but as it was a bit drizzly by this time so we all hot footed into the hotel dinning room for the soup and sandwich buffet. It was not really a buffet as we were all seated at 10 to a table where the very high quality soup and various style of finger rolls were served by the very efficient and attentive staff. Needless to say the general conversation was on “how did you find the run?” and “did you have any issues with the hills” or “wasn’t it a great route with those views of the hills through Glendevon”. This was interspersed with the usual car chat on different marques and other rallies that entrants had taken part in over the years. Whilst in the dining room, the heavens opened and heavy rain feel – however it had stopped by the time lunch ended, very well timed. Following teas and coffee it was time for the off, to dry off and remount our steeds for the afternoon section, but not before we had a good viewing session of some of Stephen’s very desirable machinery located in the lockups and garages around the house and the paddock, which he had kindly opened up for us.

Our afternoon section took us to Muthill where a sharp right turn had the intrepid rallyists storm over the single track road (with a very good macadam surface for a change) on through Craggan and Culloch where we joined the Comrie to Braco road (B827). Although I had put my hood up at the Hydro, I was still a bit chilled so stopped to put on a jacket, which of course allowed a bevy of vintage machinery to pass, so instead of being behind a grand 1931 Morris Isis, I was hot on the heels of a 1936 Aston Martin Speed model, intrigued by every gear change and alternating exhaust note!

The final stage had our assorted prewar machinery follow the quiet roads via Braco, Kinbuck and on through Bridge of Allan, where the Sunday tourists were much amused with the sight of all these vintage British marques heading through the high street. With precise route instructions to hand, we made the correct left turn into Stirling University grounds and arrived at our appointed car park outside the Stirling Court Hotel for afternoon Tea/ coffee and prize giving.

The Awards

Favourite Car award, or the car I would most like to take home – voted by the rest of the entrants – was won by Digby Morton, SWTVC member from Newton Mearns with his very smart and original 1931 Morris Isis saloon.

Oldest Car award

1912 Napier 15hp T38 belongonhg to Alex Bruce from Crossford

Perhaps Alex should have received another prize for his tenacity in not putting his hood up despite the afternoon drizzle, particularly with daughter and her chum sharing the exposed back seat!

Long Distance award

1934 Aston Martin MkII Drophead belonging to Paul & Jen Martin who had driven all the way from East Yorkshire.

From the post Tour feedback from various participants, the event was very well appreciated and many have indicated they would like to do another one next year!

Report, Bill McCreath

Photos, Wallis Weir.
