Drive it Day 2016 – Cumbernauld International Airport
Members meeting at Morrison supermarket car park, Anniesland, 11.0am.
After a short shower we were fortunate to then have a wonderful day of sunshine for our 2016 Drive it Day.
With five eligible cars and one modern we set off for Cumbernauld International airport. There we were joined by two other club member cars.
You may ask where did the International airport title comes from. This name was concocted by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation in the mid fifties. There was great expectations that international companies would set up in the new town of Cumbernauld due to the air connection with the rest of the world. Very ambitious, but alas it is still a very modest airport used mostly by private pilots and also a commercial airline, Hebrides Airlines.
Our members Dave Stewart and Gerry Parker, who are pilots flying out of Cumbernauld, gave up their day to welcome us into the control tower before Dave gave us an escorted tour around the facilities. A number of members were brave enough to slip into Dave’s own aircraft passenger seat. Not an easy task without good flexibility of the body.
Thank you to Dave for arranging this interesting visit.
