Photo videos of the Club Run run to Rosneath Castle Caravan Park.

On arrival at Kidston Car Park to set up for the SWTVC (Scottish Western Thoroughbred Vehicle Club) annual run we were greeted with rather grey looking clouds.

After setting up shop and the first cars began arriving,  bringing with them, brighter weather. In total 37 cars of various types and ages , the oldest being a 1927 Alvis 1250 Sports Saloon belonging  to John Morgan who had driven the car 166 miles from the village of Balmeddie , just north of Aberdeen.

After spending more than an hour to allow the locals to admire and put their questions to the drivers, we set off on our run around the Peninsula to be greeted by many locals waving from their gardens and vantage points.

On arrival at the Caravan Park, the run participants put their cars on display and enjoyed a light lunch in the sunshine that had  made an appearance for us.

Again, the Caravan park residents and holidaymakers mingled among and admired the cars for a couple of hours before we all left for home. Thank you Sarah Quibell the Park Manager and Siobhan the Catering Manager !

The following paragraph is from the Rhu Bay Facebook Page

“Passing Rhu, Shandon, Garelochhead, Mambeg, Clynder, arriving at Rosneath Castle Park at 12 pm, providing close-up viewing, departing 1 pm.
Event organisers, Scottish Western Thoroughbred Vehicle Club Chairman Alan Brown said “Kidston Park and Rosneath Castle Park present a great opportunity to check out a diverse and interesting range of beautiful cars. Classic cars not only appeal to car lovers, but also to lovers of engineering, design, art and history. We love showing and talking about our cars so feel free to approach us on the day”

Congratulations to Graham Runcieman who took the “Champion of  Champions” Trophy at Glamis with his magnificent MG J2. A worthy winner against some very stiff competition.

SUMMER TOUR JUNE

The club Summer Tour on June the 2nd last, by all accounts from feedback by the entrants was very positive. The organising sub committee after last year’s tour thought that by having the start nearer Glasgow (last years was at Dobbie’s, Stirling with 23 entrants) may encourage more participants, however despite this change, car numbers dropped to 16 with a couple more meeting at Fintry and Strathblane.

We were lucky with the weather being a bit overcast in the morning, but the sun did come out and fortuitously for the stalwart open cars remained dry all day.

Cars during the day ranged from 4 Alvis, 3 Austins, 3 MG’s, 1 Riley, 1 Jaguar, 1 Landrover, 1 Aston Martin, Singer and a Humber.
Finishing at the Kirkhouse saw the collection of the very sought after observation quiz sheets and self judging forms. While the organising team were taking part in the event, their cars were ineligible to win anything of course, although the voting did put a couple ahead of others, but they were discounted.
For the pre-war cars, winner was Ruairidh
Dunford with the 1929 Austin 7 GE tourer.

1945 to 1960 category went to Kevin Begen in the 1954 Austin
Healey 100 /4

1961 to 1993 was won by George McDougall in the Jaguar E Type

Annick Waugh’s A7 – Winner of observation quiz.

For the observation quiz we had a tie situation with Donald Shedden and Annick Waugh both scoring 7 points (out of possible 9) so the tie break question was put into action.
As 2024 is a 60 year anniversary of 1964 question was “what was the retail price of the 1964 Sunbeam Alpine sports tourer – including purchase tax?
The answer is £852-8-9d . Annick was closest at £575 against Donald’s £1500.0
Mention must be made of Colin Blair producing very smart rally car plaques (see heading photo), incorporating the club logo and each car’s allocated number, which gave the tour an added professional touch.
The sub committee of Roger Martin, Dan Gardner, Colin Blair, Grant Coubrough ,Ronnie Johnston and your correspondent would like to thank all participants taking part in this year’s tour.

Visit to Melvyn Thomas Collection:
This visit was arranged jointly with Ayrshire Classics Car Club, it was well attended and proved very enjoyable.
Melvyn was an excellent host and took pleasure in explaining the history of his exhibits.
This is a very interesting collection and we have arranged a further visit on Saturday 14th September to cater for members who are not free on weekdays. Everyone is welcome including anyone who has already visited and would like a second viewing. Full details will be issued in subsequent Bulletins.

Note: There is no admission charge but the club made a donation of £100 to Melvyn’s nominated charity.

I understand some members made an additional voluntary contribution.

Those of you who have been before will remember seeing a wide variety of cars and as usual no booking is required, just turn up in an interesting vehicle from about 12 noon, view what is on display, chat with interesting people and have a bite of lunch.
