Editorial:

Drive it Day

The weather was absolutely beautiful and it is a pity we were unable to celebrate the day in a group. It was my intention to take the car for a lengthy run but matters were complicated by having the appointment for my second vaccine at 3.00 on Sunday afternoon. I settled for a run through the Lanarkshire back roads and used the car to attend my appointment which was at a hall in Lanark.           The hall was queued out the door so my arrival gave those waiting a little interest.

However, we seem to be winning the war on the virus and it looks like we can plan for some events later this year and some suggestions are made later in the bulletin.

A BRIEF UPDATE ON OUR INVALIDS:

Liz Young: John tells me that Liz is making good progress but , as the burns to her legs were serious,it will still be some time before they are fully healed.

The picture below is the planter chosen and planted by Sandra which was given to Liz from the Club.

Thanks to Harry Sherry for the photo.

Ronnie Gordon: I spoke to Ronnie yesterday and he tells me his recovery is progressing well and he has even begun doing his beloved D.I.Y. work.

Both Ronnie and Liz have been through a difficult time recently and we wish them well for their continued recovery.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS:

With the expected easement of the virus precautions I believe we can reasonably plan for some outings later this year.

Dan Gardner has made the following suggestion for a gathering at the Kirkhouse Inn on Tuesday 18thMay at about 12.00.

There will still be precautions to be observed but we could meet up within the car park and enjoy a coffee and bacon roll without contravening the rules.

As you all know, the regular Third Tuesday Meetings at the Kirkhouse in Strathblane are suspended at the moment.

Club members may be interested to know that Dan Gardner has e-mailed to say that he has arranged to meet Iain Wright for an open air socially distanced bite of lunch in the Kirkhouse car park at around 12 noon on Tuesday 18th May the day following the proposed further easing of restrictions.

The Kirkhouse have recently opened a pop up takeaway service in the car park (all Covid safety measures are adhered to according to their website) . Dan has checked with the Kirkhouse and they have confirmed that lunch can be eaten standing around in the car park or at the many wooden trestle tables now  dotted around the place or even inside but numbers within are restricted.

It would be nice to meet up on a face to face basis. Zoom is all very well but it has its limitations.

On the subject of Club outings the Committee have been giving consideration to what we might arrange for later in the season.

The following proposals could be implemented at short notice when the lockdown restrictions are eased but nothing has been arranged at the moment.

1. A meeting for tea and coffee at one of the Clyde Valley Garden Centres. There would be no specific starting points, members would simply leave from home and meet up at the appointed place and time.

2. I have been in touch with the Queen Mary Project. As you will know this much loved Glasgow steamer is undergoing static preservation at a berth adjacent the Science Centre.

We have been offered a private tour of the vessel on a Sunday of our choice after the Science Centre reopens. I have been round the ship and it is an interesting visit but it would probably be best to come in your everyday car as the only parking available is in the Science Centre car park which is open to the general public.

There is no admission charge but it may be good form to offer a small donation.

I would be grateful if you could let Sandra know if you would be interested in either of these outings.

ZOOM MEETING:

Our last Zoom meeting was held on 12th April with Dave Stewart giving an entertaining account of the history of the Austin 7 and a few amusing anecdotes from his experiences with his own car.

The next meeting will be held on Monday 10th May at 7.00 P.M. when Barry Woods will present a couple of brief films of classic racing.

Sandra will issue an e-mail with joining instructions on Sunday 9th.

MOTORING TRIVIA:

In recent years safety has become a major issue and many folk have walked away from accidents that in previous times would probably have resulted in serious injury or even death.

It was not always so: This advert from 1957 promotes a child’s car seat as providing safety and comfort for the child. I doubt if these hooks would restrain the seat under hard braking never mind the forces involved in a collision. Thankfully, these products are now strictly regulated.

AND FINALLY:

Tesco are doing a “buy one get one free” offer on this. This is excellent value and there is sure to be a huge demand so you better get along quickly to avoid disappointment.

That’s all folks,

Hope to see you at the Kirkhouse on the 18th.
