Editorial:

I will begin by explaining why the Committee’s contact details are no longer shown.

I have received a few scam emails that have been made to appear they have come from other members of the Committee. As it is possible a scammer is using the Bulletin to harvest email addresses we have decided to redact this information from past bulletins published on the website and not to include it in future.

Members can make contact with any Committee members through Sandra Brown, our Secretary.

Liz Young:

As you are probably aware, Liz Young suffered a painful accident while gardening a few weeks ago.

I received the following from John yesterday.

As a result of her burns Liz had skin graft operations on both shins & ankles in the Royal Infirmary on 8th  March.

She was in hospital for 10 days.

She has to have her bandages on for 6/8 weeks.

She is just starting week 4 of her recovery, and is doing well.

ZOOM MEETING:

The meeting on 15th March was a great success with Dan Gardner giving an account of a massive collection of Cadillac cars lost when the owner tried to conceal them from tax inspectors who were investigating his affairs.  Dan finished his presentation with an account of his first Cadillac and one still in his possession.

On the subject of Cadillacs, I mentioned my visit to the famous “Cadillac Ranch” in the course of my Route 66 trip some years ago. This is a well known attraction on the Route  but there is a similar,  little known attraction a few miles away where a few VW Beetles have been half buried in the same way as the Cadillacs. I don’t know if they are connected in any way but it did occur to me that these brands represent the polar opposites of the price range.

Dan’s presentation reminded me of another piece of Cadillac history. By 1908 the company led the field in the manufacture of standardised components and to prove this a spectacular demonstration was arranged.

Three identical Cadillacs were dismantled and the parts mixed up randomly. The cars were then reassembled under strict RAC observation ensuring there was no scope for any chicanery.

It is an interesting piece of automotive history and you can read the full story on this link.

The next Zoom meeting will be at 7.00 PM on Monday 5th April.

Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs:

The first newsletter of 2021 was issued a few weeks ago and there is a link below.

It is a weighty tome with lots of information of interest to members.

I note that there is good news on the total ban on “polluting vehicles” proposed for designated Clean Air Zones in Scottish cities. This has been mitigated by an exclusion for “Historic” vehicles. The actual legislation has yet to be published but it looks like this is one concern less for us.

There is also an article by our own Roger Martin.

Look for the item headed “The Car That Changed My Life”

INTERESTING VIDEO:

I am grateful to Gordon Dow for this link to a Youtube video about Ivan Dutton ( Bugatti guru) and his Lotus 7.)

Make sure you have audio on as the car sounds great.

EVENTS:

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list, simply the ones I know of.

RSAC have announced their Spring Run on 18th April has been cancelled but they still hope to run the Three Lochs event on 8th August. (Not 15th as I said in last month’s Bulletin.)

East Ayrshire Car Club hope to hold their rally at Kames on 8th August.

Ayrshire Classics Car Club also plan to have their event at Kilmarnock on 22nd August

At the time of writing I have no certain information on any Drive it Day (25th April) events in the locality.

If I am interpreting them correctly I think an organised meeting in Scotland may not comply with current restrictions.

I like to observe DID so if all else fails I will use one of the oldies for my shopping on the day, possibly taking a circuitous route.

That’s all folks, keep safe and enjoy the spring weather as best you can.
